What is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra is an ancient guided meditative practice of deep, conscious rest and a state of awareness that lies between waking and sleeping.
Often translated as “yogic sleep” Yoga Nidra invites the body into profound relaxation while awareness remains gently present. Practised lying down or seated comfortably, you are guided through layers of experience -body, breath, sensation, and imagery, without effort or strain. There is nothing to achieve and nothing to fix. You are simply invited to rest and listen.
Yoga Nidra is also a distinct state of consciousness - a liminal space between waking, dreaming, and deep sleep, with shifts into slower brainwave patterns (alpha, theta, sometimes delta).
As the body settles, the nervous system naturally shifts out of survival and into states of safety and restoration. In this deeply restful state, the usual mental defenses soften, allowing access to deeper layers of experience that are not easily reached in ordinary waking life where memory consolidation, emotional processing, and nervous system regulation naturally occur.
Even when it feels like “nothing has happened” subtle and meaningful shifts can be taking place beneath the surface.
You may drift in and out of awareness or fall asleep at times - all of which are welcome. Each experience is valid. Yoga Nidra meets you exactly where you are.
In a world where our attention is being pulled in all directions, Yoga Nidra offers something both simple and radical: a way to rest and to reconnect with the quiet intelligence and wisdom that lives within the body.
